This vacuum sucks

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

This post at Management Craft resonated with me. There’s something magical about products or services that just flat out work well. My favorite few lines:

Come hell or high water this is going to be a great place to work that produces amazing results. Period. What if you started there? How would that change your decisions, actions, and conversations?

I often get frustrated at work because the company’s culture dictates that we get things done so that it’s acceptable, but no further. The daily struggle for me is to figure out how to demand “amazing results” when senior management isn’t necessarily interested in that.

No States Meet Teacher Quality Goal

Friday, May 12th, 2006

I was saddened to see that North Carolina was one of the 9 states to not meet a teacher quality goal and will face the prospect of funding cuts. Since my kids will be going to school here, it’s of particular concern. But, one line from this article caught my eye.

Although the federal term is “highly qualified,” the definition is widely regarded as more of a minimum qualification, because it requires teachers to know what they teach.

Can you imagine? The law “requires teachers to know what they teach.” It’s hard to believe this requires a law. One would think to be hired, you would have to be qualified. I guess not.

Why the Yankees are different

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

These two lines sum it up for me.

The Angels celebrated their success last season by raising their 2005 West division championship flag before the game. The Yankees, of course, will have no such recognition of their American League East title on Tuesday in the Bronx.

The goal is a World Series championship. Anything less is failure.
